The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to have brushed off the embarrassing defeat from last Sunday night and are ready to pick up the pieces and move on as well as getting their ship afloat again.
But for some, they are already overreacting and coming out of the mouth of former NFL great Deion Sanders might be one of the most moronic statements from this early point of the season. This is what Sanders said on television the other day:
“I’m going to go on record to say, I don’t think Big Ben will finish the season. I think mentally, physically, something’s going to shut down. Because what I saw today was a lackluster effort by the offense, the defense, by the coaching staff, by everyone. And he seemed not engaged. There was no big-play ability. No running game. Nothing ever got going offensively, and he seemed disinterested. And we’ve all heard the murmurs of Big Ben saying. I would like to retire. The way they played today, a couple more of those games, I think that would happen.”
Is there is bigger idiot anywhere in the sports world today? He obviously does not know Ben Roethlisberger and his character. When Big Ben spoke of retirement before it was out of frustration. Obviously, the Pittsburgh Steelers are NOT going to win the rest of their games this season and Roethlisberger has been on the losing end plenty throughout his career.
There have been a handful of disappointments but Big Ben has never given up and walked away from the game because of losing. He’s not about to do that now. He does not want to be an Andrew Luck and simply quit while there is gas left in the tank. Sanders may have been one of the great football players of all time, but announcer and sports analyst he is not.
So while Antonio Brown makes his Patriots debut this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, on Jacksonville sports radio yesterday one host said he challenged anyone to take a bet that New England either fails to reach the Super Bowl with Brown on the roster or if they make it, they will NOT win the Lombardi again. Only as long as A.B. is a member. Given Brown’s track record, it would be amazing if he can keep his mouth shut and his antics away from the public over the next 16 weeks.
This is for sure…Bill Belichick will NEVER put up with the stupidity that Antonio Brown brings to the table. If Brown acts up again and the Patriots head coach deals with it and ignores it, then Belichick will look as stupid and as lame as Jon Gruden just did in handling A.B. in Oakland. My guess is that this simply won’t work with the philosophies and team attitude that goes on in Patriots world. We are all bracing ourselves waiting for the next act of idiocrasy from one Antonio Brown.
Last night the Oakland Raiders defeated the Denver Broncos proving they can win a game WITHOUT Antonio Brown and in the process; there were some Silver and Black fans that had A.B. in mind.
In other football news, former Steelers great and Hall of Famer Lynn Swann had been the Athletic Director at his alma mater (University of Southern California) until yesterday. Swanny quickly resigned but denied that his departure had anything to do with an FBI investigation into the school’s athletic program and accusations that because of connections to a donor who contributes some of the largest money to USC was the reason Swann was hired in the first place.
One of the UFC’s most obnoxious fighters is refusing to shut up. Interim welterweight champion Colby Covington was not only threatened by Jorge Masvidal yesterday, he was yapping about how a fight with Karmaru Usman for the undisputed title has fallen through. Said Covington:
“I was ready to fight, but the UFC came to me with the basic challenger’s offer. I'm a champion but there was no negotiation. They came and ran at me and said, here, take this or leave it and we'll pass it on to the next person. That's not fair negotiating and that's not right. So I'm not going to take the first offer that you offer me. Usman didn't want to fight anybody. He didn't want to fight me. He didn't want to fight my ex-best friend, Jorge Masvidal. He didn't want to fight Leon Edwards. The problem is Usman. The problem has nothing to do with me. I have a world title and they still want to treat me like crap. They still want to not give me any room to negotiate and work. It's not fair. The company is rolling in money. Thirty percent growth last month. We all know the ESPN deal. They’re making so much money. They need to make this right.”
The only part Covington got right was the last few things he said about the UFC and the money they make. That’s absolutely true. But he’s the champion? Excuse me…no you are not. You are interim champion which in any division should hold no weight. There should not even be interim champs.
Last weekend Dustin Poirier lost his chance at a title as Khabib Nurmagomedov did what he has done to everyone he has faced…mauled them. The defeat left Poirier very emotional and moved to tears just after the fight in the Octagon and at the post-fight press conference. Now Poirier is talking retirement. WHAT? He needs to man up and face one fact…SOMEONE has to be the best of the division. He faced a much more talented fighter and he should come to terms with that. Dustin Poirier has nothing to hang his head about. He fought a great fight and against anyone else he probably would have won. This is the exact thing Ronda Rousey did. She lost not once but twice both miserably then hung her had, talked suicide, was depressed, and left the game for good. Said Poirier:
“Thank you guys for the support, it means a lot to me. If I choose to fight again, I'll be back strong. If not, I'll see what God has in store for me. Thank you.”
While I mentioned squawkers like Covington, along comes Tony Ferguson the probable challenger to Khabib next who said this about evaluating Nurmagomedov’s game:
“Lazy, one dimensional.”
Some fighters are just plain stupid, ignorant, and arrogant.
Khabib will win that fight just the same way he has won EVERY fight he’s been in.
